Listening to radio!
Staff member
Hi. I'm from the county of Lancashire in the north-west of England.

I first got interested in radio in the 1990's when my friend down the road showed me his Grandad's CB radio. The airwaves were alive and I wanted to be a part of it. I begged my Mum to get me one and eventually I got a little Midland 40 channel CB radio, power supply and a mobile antenna from a shop called Sound Service in Burnley (Now closed down). The guy at the shop was an expert and explained what I needed to do to have it working. Once home, I begged my stepdad to attach my aerial to an old, metal ironing board we had spare and the job was a good one. The house was three-storeys, and I had the top bedroom, so my location was perfect. I listened for days not daring to speak, it was amazing listening to all the conversations, and nearly all the channels had discussions going on.

I finally plucked up the courage to start speaking and I settled on the handle 'ironing board'. After a few days of ridicule, I changed my handle to 'black rod'. My reason being that the aerial was black and was kind of like a rod. I've used that handle ever since, although I've not used CB radio for a number of years now.

I met many good people from the CB over the years as I grew up, and it wasn't long before I was driving with my CB radios in the car. Playing hide-and-seek and eyeball with other CB'ers was great fun. The amount of people that used to go mobile was staggering, but back then CB was busy.

I got interested in radio scanners not long after having a CB, mainly as people played the police communications over the CB airwaves and I wanted to know more. I had an interest in joining the Police (I nearly made it but due to health reasons I had to give up my choice of career) and thought it was a good way to learn more about the role and how they work. I eventually got my first scanner from a local Tandy store, a Realistic 10-channel handheld that only scanned, no searching. I had to ask someone on the CB radio for frequencies. It wasn't long before I had a collection of scanners and I was listening to all sorts at once and loved it.

To today, well I still have an interest in radio obviously, mainly radio scanners. I enjoy searching the airwaves to see what's out there. I am thinking of getting my amateur radio licence at some point, I've been meaning to for a number of years, but I've never got round to it, mainly due to ill health.

Thanks for reading :)
